It may sound cliché, but you never do have a second chance to make a first impression. Especially when dating. Unfortunately, judgments are in high gear on a date, so it’s important to put your best foot forward. And yes, this means your appearance.

I live in L.A. where everything is casual…people wear jeans to work and flip-flops to work. However, when you are meeting a date for the first time, don’t show up in sweats or t-shirts. Look like you put a little effort into it. Not only will your date notice, but you will feel more confident. Some things to keep in mind:

1. If you wore it 10 years ago, don’t put it on. Even if you are new to the dating scene again, please don’t recycle your wardrobe. Buy something new or borrow from a friend. You want to go out feeling good AND current.

2. Don’t be sloppy. You don’t have to wear an expensive suit or dress to impress a …

Everyone has something physical about them that makes them self-conscious – we’re such an appearance-obsessed society that it would be weird if we were completely impervious to the thousands of ads we see a day. Maybe our teeth aren’t perfectly straight or perfectly white. Maybe we’re overweight or underweight. We might be shorter than average, or taller than average. Maybe we have unruly hair, or no hair at all.

The surprising truth about our obsession with appearance is that, by and large, we are much more self-critical than we are critical of others. A multitude of “imperfections” can be masked by one thing: confidence. Most of the techniques people use to try to hide what they’re nervous about – covering their mouth, slouching down – actually backfire and draw attention to the very thing you’re trying to mask. What actually works is acting confident: good posture (no matter your height or body type), smiling (regardless of teeth status), being natural and relaxed.

I found this TechCrunch article on a new dating site for Apple Fanboys and Fangirls extremely funny. The dating site is called Cupidtino. Here is author Michael Arrington thoughts on this new service:

Apple fans can be annoying when they’re on their own. The thought of them breeding and creating little Apple fans, a whole family of hard core hipster Apple lovers, is just not a good thing. On the other hand, making sure that Apple fans only date other Apple fans is a good way of stopping them from spreading their Apple fan genes to the general population, I guess. So maybe this site isn’t all bad.

I also had a laugh when I read this comment from one of TechCrunch visitors:

Actually, we need to dilute the apple fanboy/girl gene pool by breeding INTO it, as shocking as that may sound. By sacrificing small bits of ourselves, over time, …

The Skout dating application for the iPhone has reached version 2.0 and not only did it get some new features it also got a design makeover. New features include virtual gifts, a game called "Look at Me" which allows you to bid for attention of other members and a Wink-Bomb. The bomb allows members using Skout to reach hundreds of singles in your proximity all at once with location based dating and the GPS in your phone. With the app you can then find out who has been looking at your profile and think you’re hot. With this information in hand you can then contact these people to meet up somewhere close by.

Whether you are new to the online dating game, or consider yourself a veteran, would you like a little inspiration when it comes to crafting your online profile? After all, if you want to attract more people or perhaps even a different type of person, there might be room for improvement.

Consider the following:

1. DO use “action” shots. Maybe you like the professional headshots you’ve been using in your profile, but according to recent studies by popular dating site OkCupid.com, men and women actually prefer to see pictures of potential matches in an “active shot”, particularly “doing something interesting”. So, if you play guitar or like to rock climb, consider posting a picture of yourself doing one of these activities.

2. DON’T be generic in your interests. Writing …

The Archived tab is a relatively new feature of the eHarmony communication process. When you know you are not interested in communicating with a Match that eHarmony gives you, just click on "Archive this Match" link. The Match will then be moved from your New Matches section too the Archive Tab. There is also a new auto-archive feature that goes along with the tab that will (as the name suggests) auto archive any Match that closed communication with you. These archived Matches will still appear in the Match Updates list if any one of them updates their profile information or photos.

If you find a Match in your updates that you want to reconnect with because the update renewed your interest, eHarmony does allow you to un-archive any Match to continue on with the guided communication process.

Most online dating sites have a profile section wherein you are expected to talk about what you’re looking for in your ideal mate. While this section is certainly helpful, it’s what I like to call the “danger” section – the section in which people get themselves in trouble. It’s a section that can make or break a profile.

There are many things you can do to improve that section, and your profile as a whole, but here’s the easiest, simplest tip that will make a difference: when talking about what you’re looking for, don’t talk about what you’re not looking for. It’s really as simple as that. Which sounds more appealing? “My dream guy would take in a Lakers game with me” or “I don’t want to date a girl that plays games or is in it for my money”?

Similarly, while you don’t want to give an endless laundry list of physical qualities you’re looking for (your reader may feel like you’re too picky), it can be easier to send the message you’re intending if you stick to concre …

In recent years, much attention has been paid to “pick-up artist” techniques, even spurring a reality show on VH1. I’ve never been a fan of them. Indeed, I think if you’re looking for more than a quick hook-up you’re wasting your time, because much of “the Game” is posturing – even more than your average “let’s get dressed up and pretend this is our everyday look” sort of fakery. Most importantly, I find most pick-up artist techniques disrespectful to women, the men utilizing the techniques, even relationships in general. Here’s the funny thing, though: By and large, the techniques of pick-up artists do not work on online dating profiles.

The reasons for this are many. For one thing, one of the most well-known PUA strategies is something called a “neg” – a backhanded comment. The general premise is that by essentially insulting a woman, you’re demonstrating your confidence, and therefore increasing your desirability. As you might imagine, hitting the right amount of sar …
